Biosolids Composting Facility Expansion

Old Orchard Beach owns, operates, and maintains a biosolids composting facility which processes up to 2,800 wet tons of wastewater biosolids per year from the town and the nearby city of Saco. The aerated static pile facility was originally constructed in 1981.

Wright-Pierce was retained to conduct a feasibility study for upgrading and expanding the facility on the existing 3.5-acre site. When the study was completed, the two communities formed a partnership to proceed with the preliminary design of a new tunnel composting facility.

The proposed facility included an enclosed mixing area with feedstock storage and mixer; three tunnels for composting, and chemical scrubbers; and biofilters for odor control. Modifications to the existing building allowed for covered curing. Additional office space was also part of the proposed plan.
