GIS and Hydraulic Modeling

The City of Newport retained Wright-Pierce to provide  TEST Geographic Information Services (GIS) in regard to the City's supply and distribution systems. The scope of work Wright-Pierce is performing includes three important projects. The GIS-integrated hydraulic modeling project includes the development of a GIS geo-database to consolidate and link all records in the water system. The database serves as the foundation of the hydraulic model using an H2OMap platform. A safe yield study of the city's reservoir system was also conducted.

Design/study features included the following:

  • Development of a complete GIS including records scanning;
  • GPS field data collection and development of ArcGIS geodatabase integrating all customer, billing and distribution system assets;
  • Development of a hydraulic model using the geodatabase information;
  • Evaluation of transmission system hydraulics using modeling and computations;
  • Safe yield study of the reservoir system including bathymetry surveys of 7 of the 9 reservoirs;
  • Development of a reservoir operations plan to optimize flows from the supply.

Project Highlights

Services Provided

  • Development of complete GIS for water assets within the city and surrounding communities
  • Safe yield analysis and operations plan for multiple reservoir supply systems
  • Development of hydraulic model for 170-mile distribution system
  • Bathymetry surveys of seven of nine community reservoirs

Project Accomplishments

  • Consolidation and integration of all water system assets into a single GIS geo-database
  • Improved records and asset management
  • Accurate estimates of supply capacity
  • Improved operations rules to optimize reservoir system supply
  • Accurate hydraulic model linked to GIS and database
