Water Supply Plan Upgrade

Wright-Pierce recently updated the Town of Sprague Water and Sewer Authority's 5-year water supply plan in accordance with Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH) and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) requirements. This effort included a review of the current status of the public water supply and distribution system. The Authority could not satisfy the CT DPH requirements to have a sufficient back-up water source should one well fail or be taken out of service.

Based on a review of existing aquifer mapping along the Shetucket River in Sprague, an initial evaluation of potential new water sources - including an interconnection to an adjacent community water system and new well locations - was performed. An assessment of the difficulty in obtaining a DEP Groundwater Diversion Permit was also conducted.  Based on this evaluation, the Authority decided to pursue the new well as a back-up water source.

Wright-Pierce assisted the Authority in obtaining a USDA Rural Development Grant to for the test wells in order to  determine the viability of selected locations.

An angled well was identified as a viable option because it  allowed the well head to be located outside of the river flood zone which would avoid difficult site and permit issues.

Wright-Pierce used the 5-year plan as the basis to develop a logical, prioritized, and affordable long-term capital improvement program for the Authority.
