Water Pollution Control Facility Upgrade
In order to meet increasingly stringent nitrogen removal regulatory requirements, address safety concerns with the use of chlorine gas, and upgrade aging equipment and systems, the Town hired Wright-Pierce to provide the design and construction administration services for the upgrade of their water pollution control facilities.
The $25 million upgrade will include:
- New 4-stage, Bardenpho process to provide for nitrogen removal to the General Permit for Nitrogen Discharges permit limits
- Improvements to the solids handling system, including demolition of the existing incinerator and a new sludge thickening system
- New headworks with mechanical screening and grit removal systems
- New odor control system
- Two new secondary clarifiers and improvements to two existing secondary clarifiers
- Upgrade of final effluent and stormwater pumps
- Improvements to the scum and septage handling systems
- New laboratory and improvements to the operations building;
- New electrical service and distribution system
- New emergency generator
- Conversion of the effluent disinfection system from chlorine gas to ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system
- New computer-based SCADA system.
