WebGIS Platform

Wright-Pierce developed GIS spatial databases of the town's assets and created a web-enabled browser interface, which allows easy access to information by all town departments. The mapping software was customized for the town’s specific needs.

Like many municipalities with limited staff resources and little knowledge of GIS software, the Town of Hamilton was relying on outside consultants whenever they needed to produce GIS maps or query geospatial data. In order to be independent, more efficient, and to reduce costs, the Town selected Wright-Pierce to develop a cost-effective GIS that enables staff to easily access information about the town’s assets, which previously resided in paper archives.

Wright-Pierce developed GIS spatial databases of town assets and created a web-enabled browser interface which allows access to information by all town departments. Staff training was provided to ensure proficiency in the use of the hardware and software. The familiar browser interface made accessibility and usability easy, and helped staff smoothly transition away from using outside consultants.

Project Highlights

Background

Municipal staff desired intranet access to existing and future GIS data. Hamilton had invested in the formation of GIS maps for presentations and reference.

Challenges

  • Town is reliant upon outside consultants to produce GIS maps and query geospatial data. This is costly and inefficient.
  • Insufficient staffing resources familiar with GIS software.

Solutions

  • Browser friendly GIS allows the entire staff intranet access.
  • Use of open source software eliminates expensive licensing fees and simplifies future expandability.
