Water Engineer Rob Williamson Presents at Regional Conference

The Southern Maine Regional Water Council (SMRWC), formed in 2005, is a membership of seven private and public water utilities serving York and Cumberland Counties.

SMRWC commissioned Wright-Pierce to conduct a master planning study of the region’s water supply to determine if regionalization of public water would be beneficial and feasible. The study evaluated the benefits and opportunities of working collectively to assure a safe and reliable water supply to meet the region’s growing needs.

Rob Williamson, Senior Project Manager of the SMRWC project, was invited to present the master plan findings at the Council's recent annual conference.  Rob explains, "water utilities are looking to explore regional opportunities to solve water-related issues more affordably. Specifically, increased demand for service, aging infrastructure, and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. While regional solutions require overcoming "turf" issues, the potential payoffs are significant."

The SMRWC includes seven of the largest utilities in the southern Maine coastal region, serving the most densely populated region of the state. The combined service territory extends nearly 60 miles, from the Maine - New Hampshire border, north beyond Portland.
