Wright-Pierce’s 2025 Calendar Series highlights projects featured in our yearly calendar. We continue this year’s series with a look at our Greylock Glen Water System Improvements Project.
Project Overview
The Greylock Glen Water System Improvements project in Adams, Massachusetts, is an important infrastructure component promoting the safety and development of the community and recreational visitors served by the system. Led by Senior Project Manager, Ed Whatley, this project served to provide the needed fire flow for the existing and future outdoor-oriented developments in the Greylock Glen area.
The highlight of the project, and subject of the calendar photo, is the construction of a 350,000-gallon glass-fused-to-steel elevated water storage tank. Other aspects included approximately 1,500 feet of ductile iron water main, pump station modifications, an above-grade heated meter enclosure, and a backflow preventer vault to separate the non-potable fire system from the potable water system. The project was completed in November 2024 and has been serving the community since.
About the Photo
Project Engineer Taylor Gray captured the photo of the 350,00-gallon tank. The tank (in blue) sits atop a concrete pedestal (in grey). When asked about the photo and the project Taylor said, “I think the photo tells a story of the beauty of the Mount Greylock reservation and why local, state, and federal agencies were willing to invest in public infrastructure for the Greylock Glen recreational development. This water storage tank, funded in part by the Economic Development Administration, is an important piece of the puzzle for the development that will support recreational activities for the Town of Adams and the people visiting Greylock Glen.
Project Impact
The Town of Adams has been investing in an expansion of their water system at the Glen to support development and improvements to recreation including an outdoor center, amphitheater, campgrounds, and Nordic ski center. The Town has not only addressed the safety of the community but their quality of life as well with the support of recreational projects. When the Glen is fully developed, the storage tank will be converted to serve the area with the needed fire flow as well as the daily potable water demand.
